Pick of the Week – Villagers | Event Rocks
Pick of the Week – Villagers

When we unleashed our brand new site Manchester Rocks seven days ago, with it we launched a new blog feature titled ‘Pick of the Week’. The feature only appeared on Manchester’s blog last time, however, this week we are taking it out for a spin on Belfast and Dublin. For you, the Belfast reader, we have chosen Mercury Award Nominees Villagers who are set to play the Black Box on Thursday (9th of September) as part of this years Open House Festival.

Conor O'Brien aka Villagers

I first came across Villagers, the musical vehicle for singer and songwriter Conor O’Brien, when they appeared as a three piece on RTE’s Other Voices in early 2009. The band were performing the track ‘Pieces’ which now appears on the debut album ‘Becoming a Jackal’. I later caught the group live when they were touring Ireland as support for Bell X1. On both occasions I was blown away and having spent the past few hours trawling through live footage of Villagers, watching Conor perform solo and with band, it seems that the songwriter is continually growing and adapting as a performer and that the once makeshift group of musicians that accompany him are becoming more of a unit. Anyone attending this intimate gig is in for a real treat.

The Open House Festival itself comes highly recommended from me and Villagers is my pick of the festival as well as the very first pick of the week for Belfast-Rocks.

Listen out for ‘Becoming a Jackal’,  ’Home’ and ‘Pieces’.

Villagers play Black Box, Belfast this Thursday night (9th of September).
